About Us

Who we are and what we do.

The Charity Law Association was established at the end of 1992 with the aim of enabling those who advise on or use charity law to meet together, to exchange ideas and intelligence and to use their experience and expertise for the benefit of the charity sector.

To ensure that it is free to promote any changes to charity law which appear to its members, based on their expertise in the field, to be necessary or desirable the Association is not itself a charity.

The Association works closely with the Charity Commission and is now consulted by Government and others in connection with charity law issues. Two projects of which the Association is particularly proud are the development of a new legal structure for charities (in relation to which the Association's partners are NCVO and Liverpool University) and the publication of Charity Commission approved model constitutional documents for charitable trusts, companies and associations.

The Association currently has over 850 members including many of the country's largest charities and most leading charity lawyers. Members or their representatives are able to attend quarterly meetings at which charity law and related issues are discussed. The Association also provides members with quarterly updates on developments in the field; the opportunity to attend its annual one day conference and hard and disk copies of each of the Charity Commission approved model documents.
